Thinking of investing ‘someday’? Get financially literate today
For us women, becoming financially literate is not just smart…
It’s an act of hardcore self care.
And I would not be where I am today (owner of 5 businesses, living my best life in Bali with a gorgeous two year old in tow and plenty of time to play on the weekends) had I not spent time building and honing my financial literacy.
I certainly wouldn’t have the life I do without bringing in the support I have.
Yep, I can afford to bring in a lot of support because I have financial literacy.
But it also means I get to be rich in all of the other ways that matter most.
Without the help I have around me, I’d still fumble my way through, but I’d be an absolute basket case hating on everyone around me (and they’d be hatin’ on me equally lols).
It’s taken me years to allow this amount of support into my life.
There was a time when I genuinely thought I could hold it all and still be a nice person…
Turns out that ain’t possible.
But in my attempt to try, I waited until I had…
…The right amount of money in my account
…I was ‘good enough’ to have it
…I’d found the right person
Maybe you can relate?
Gosh, the dichotomy of waiting.
I believe it absolutely has its place…
Case in point: This week I postponed the launch of my new accessories brand Okumé and Femtek (the company I’m a major shareholder in) did the same thing with their new product.
Both delays were due to quality issues. Taking our time to ensure quality is delivered to our customers is paramount so in this case waiting is necessary.
But here’s what absolutely can not wait → your financial literacy.
It saddens me to see so many women leaving their wealth creating potential to chance.
And I also get it.
It’s tempting to wait…
…until you have the money…
…until you understand it better…
…until you find the right person to support you.
But I really encourage you to shift this way of thinking, because, to be blunt, it’s cock-blocking you.
And this is what my mission is all about: supporting as many women as possible to free themselves from the shackles of money.
You CAN make your own decisions, your own money and your own investments.
And I don’t care what background you have or where you’ve come from.
Money isn’t reserved for the wealthy.
Money is freely available to us all.
You just have to know where to look.
And then you have to know what to do with it once you’ve got it (spoiler alert: it’s not how much you make, it’s what you do with it).
The amount of convos I have on a daily basis with women who truly believe:
“There’s no point learning this stuff because I don’t and will not ever have any money to invest.”
or
“I’m so busy with the kids, as a single mum, I haven’t had a chance to think about dinner much less about the amount of money I need to retire with.”
or
“We’re living just above the line as it is, what’s the point?!”
If you can relate to any of that, I totally get that learning about investing can feel like an unattainable dream.
I also want you to know that you do not need to wait.
In fact, time is of the essence and you deserve to know as much, if not MORE, about money than anyone.
You know how people say, “when I win the lottery, life will be better!”
Well what happens when you DO actually land a win (say, in the form of an inheritance) and you know nothing about money?
What’s that other saying…’easy come, easy go’...
I want you to be ready for that win.
But you must start now!
And you don’t have to spend all your time studying this stuff either.
Here’s how you start growing your money muscle:
Stop waiting ‘until [insert excuse here]’ and just DECIDE
Get around people who speak about money in an open and favourable way (most of us are surrounded by those who know nothing about money, have a lot of shame around it or simply diss money along with anyone who has it)
Dip your toe into conversations about different asset classes and how those who are interacting with them are finding it - the good, bad and indifferent
Build your network with people who want to learn like you do, no matter what level they are in (ideally I always try to be the dumbest person in the room)
Get yourself an accountability partner, someone who is on the same path as you, eager to learn and grow together
Most of all, don’t be hard on yourself. Rome wasn't built in a day.
You don’t have to wait until the ‘right time”.
Start with small, consistent steps.
Just start.
